College System
How does the College system at Cambridge work?
The University determines the curriculum and provides formal teaching through lectures, seminars, and practical classes via various Faculties and Departments. It also sets and marks examinations and awards degrees at the end of the course. All students, regardless of their College, attend the same sessions and take the same examinations.
The Colleges’ three main responsibilities include processing admissions, providing academic support through supervisions, and providing pastoral care to their students
More information on the College and what they provide is available on the Cambridge Admissions website.
Are any of the Colleges better for Natural Sciences?
Regarding Natural Sciences, no College is better than another.
All students receive the same teaching experience provided by the Faculties and Departments. Therefore, differences between Colleges lie in atmosphere and environment, not educational opportunities.
All Cambridge Colleges accept applications for Natural Sciences. Prospective students are encouraged to visit some Colleges to see where they might like to live and study, and to speak with a Director of Studies or Tutor for specific information. Guidance on how to choose (and how not to choose) a College can be found on the Undergraduate Study website.
